Octahedron: Transfixed Edition pulses its way onto PC

Extravagantly audio-visual platformer now available to download on Steam

Help.

Last time I talked about Octahedron: Transfixed Edition, I mentioned how its addictive qualities had caused some... professional inconvenience. Things have gotten worse.

Now the neon-soaked world of Octahedron has started to seep into my dreams. When I close my eyes, all I see are flashing flowers and pulsating platforms - all accompanied by a driving chiptune beat.

Nintendo Switch owners will know what I’m talking about - Octahedron: Transfixed Edition launched on the platform last month to critical acclaim - but now it’s time for PC players to join the party.

Because Octahedron: Transfixed Edition is now available on Steam.

What’s Octahedron: Transfixed Edition then?

At its core, Octahedron is a platformer that tasks you with ascending vertical levels, while dodging enemies and obstacles. It features tight controls and level design that challenges the brain as much as the fingers. But that’s only part of the story, because what makes Octahedron such a sleep-invader is its mesmerizing audio-visual presentation.

Every facet of the game is drenched in neon that glows and changes colour based on your actions, and the beat of the music. Oh, and what sweet music it is - the soundtrack features superb tracks from artists like Monomirror, Chipzel, André Sobota and Derek Howell. It’s all designed to get you into a flow zone - that blissful state of concentration where thoughts drift away and you become one with the game.

Things start deceptively simple, introducing a core mechanic - the ability to create your own platforms in the air, and giving you ample space to get used to it. But soon you’ll be dealing with more complex layouts, regular new mechanics and innovative uses for the old ones.

The Transfixed Edition throws in some neat new extras too, including time trial medals, loads of new challenges, and some post-game unlockables.

So why’s it a (literal) dream game?

When Octahedron clicks with you, it’s hard to break free from its clutches - and not just because of its flashy aesthetic.

It’s abundantly clear is that the game’s been very carefully tuned to cater to different types of player. Finishing each level is a fairly straightforward task - there’ll be tricky moments, but if you tune into the beat and use your platforms with care, you’ll be able to clear every stage.

But to 100% complete them - well, that’s a different matter entirely. Each stage is packed with things to collect and smash - and getting to all of them will challenge even the most skilled gamer.

If you’re like me, you’ll fail time and time again, but… well, just one more go, right?
